About Stories Within

An open notebook, pen, old photographs and a cup of tea beside a glowing Irish cottage fire.

Welcome to Stories Within. Fáilte go Stories Within.

I’m April Kavanagh née Plant, an Irish writer in County Dublin exploring childhood, foster care, survival and healing. Through personal stories and reflections, I hope to give voice to experiences that are often carried quietly in our hearts—and to show that even after difficult beginnings, healing and hope are possible. I believe everyone has a story to tell.

For me, storytelling is deeply rooted in Irish culture. Some of my happiest memories are of sitting around a fire, listening to stories being shared and watching them bring people together. We have always found meaning in stories told by the fireside, across the kitchen table and passed from one generation to the next. I have distinct memories of watching Irish mammies listening to one another while hanging the washing out on the clothesline or preparing food while children run chaotically around their feet. Stories were shared in the middle of everyday life.

Stories Within is my small contribution to that tradition—although the fire may now be a laptop screen and the kitchen table usually comes with a lovely cuppa.

Thank you for being here. I hope something you read makes you feel understood, encouraged or a little less alone.

And if you have a story inside you, I hope you’ll feel welcome to reach out and share it. Together, we can keep the fire of storytelling alive and carry our stories far and wide.

Go n-éirí an bóthar leat, agus go bhfaighidh tú dóchas i gcónaí ar do shlí.

May the road rise to meet you, and may you always find hope along the way.

Slán leat anois.

Goodbye for now.
